I have long said that brands and agencies should do more with their data. What you see in your Amazon Ad Console, Seller Central, and Vendor Central is great\u2014but if you really want to scale, you want to have data that\u2019s customized to your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as more brands and agencies discuss APIs, I\u2019m starting to encounter a common pattern. So often, I see brands pull in their data, without realizing there is a lot more to be done to get value out of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the reality: <strong>Establishing these API connections alone is not enough<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you build API connections with no plan for how to organize and enrich that data, you&#8217;re going to be stuck sifting through a whole lot of confusing inputs. Next, you need to <strong>enrich, organize, visualize, and analyze<\/strong> all of that data. Let me explain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-enrich-your-data\"><strong>Step 1: Enrich your data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enrichment is essentially the process of adding additional data, tags, and attributes to help you build a story specific to your company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps dramatically shrink what I sometimes call the \u201ctime to insight\u201d from data. Here are a few examples of data enrichment:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currency conversions.<\/strong> If you are a brand with a presence across multiple geographic marketplaces, you have to deal with different currencies. Currencies have to be normalized to understand performance across these geographies. And for that, you need currency conversion data handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"605\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-1024x605.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26553 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-1024x605.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-768x454.png 768w, https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-1536x908.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency-560x331.png 560w, https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/intentwise-currency.png 1923w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/605;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grouping. <\/strong>Next, you want to bundle campaigns and products in ways that are unique to your company: by price, by subcategory, by brand, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Product and campaign grouping has to be baked into your datasets for you to build reports relevant to your needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you sell 5,000 different products. It makes no sense to try to evaluate all of your campaigns on the product level. You\u2019re going to group products together to run this analysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(We explained the benefits of grouping in more depth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/blog\/amazon-advertising\/how-to-group-ad-campaigns-for-deeper-analytics\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brand vs. non-brand. <\/strong>Each brand has its own set of brand terms to maintain. Take your search term report as an example. You\u2019re going to want to segment out brand vs. non-brand search terms in order to have a clearer picture of which campaigns are driving incremental sales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-reorganize-your-data-to-support-faster-analytics\"><strong>Step 2: Reorganize your data to support faster analytics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enriching the data you sourced from Amazon\u2019s APIs is critical\u2014but the reality is, when you\u2019re in charge of marketing for a brand, you need to see many different metrics quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where the next step comes in: Reorganizing all of these insights into a single view.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting that 360 view isn\u2019t easy. You need to join together dozens of different data sets you downloaded from Amazon\u2019s APIs. It\u2019s an incredibly time consuming process, and it\u2019s prone to error. Messing up one line in the report can spoil the entire data set.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever spent hours in Excel writing VLOOKUPs to bring your inventory, sales, and ads data together\u2014you know exactly what I mean.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wait-why-are-we-talking-about-apis-now-nbsp\"><strong>Wait, why are we talking about APIs now?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason APIs are on the minds of many brands is that Amazon is now sharing more data than ever through its APIs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intentwise.com\/amazon-marketing-cloud\">Amazon Marketing Cloud<\/a> and Amazon Marketing Stream are providing new views into your Amazon performance. AMC is now even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7049757482532892672\">showing up in the Ad Console<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I think there\u2019s another reality to keep in mind. AI is becoming increasingly accessible to brands. Making the most of it requires brands to own their data, keep it comprehensive, enriched, and organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a theoretical AI that can identify under-performing products. Unless you have enriched and connected your fragmented data, how will the AI know that, say, those ten products belong to a single group?
